John Lydon hurt his back wearing a heavy costume on The Masked Singer
Sex Pistols icon John Lydon has revealed that he "put (his) back out" by wearing a heavy Yak costume on ITV's The Masked Singer.
John Lydon hurt his back as he performed on The Masked Singer.
The former Sex Pistols frontman was unmasked as Yak in Saturday's (10.01.26) episode of the hit ITV show and admits that his costume put a lot of strain on his body because it was so heavy.
Speaking on ITV's This Morning on Monday (12.01.26), John said: "You cannot sing in an outfit like that, it's so hot and heavy. I put my shoulder out, I put my back out."
The music icon admits that he signed up for The Masked Singer because it would pay for him and his band Public Image Ltd to record a new album in Portugal.
Asked why he took part in the show, Lydon said: "Fun, firstly. But mostly the money. Money has now paid for us to go and record in Portugal for a solid month and a nice little holiday afterwards."
John – who is also known by his former stage name Johnny Rotten – is aware that "serious musicians" may scoff at his appearance on The Masked Singer, but doesn't care what his detractors think.
The 69-year-old star told hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley: "I know things like this are viewed negatively by what they call 'serious musicians'. Well, eff the lot of them, I'm up for a laugh. Whole families can watch, that's great fun isn't it."
John was rumbled on the show by judge Jonathan Ross and guest panellist Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff and admits that his rehearsals "went straight out of the window" because he already knew the pair and had to hurriedly try and disguise his voice as a result.
He explained: "That was a huge problem, knowing Jonathan Ross and Flintoff. All that rehearsing went straight out of the window."
Lydon performed Olivia Newton-John's track Physical during the show and quipped that the track's music video left a lasting impression on him during his younger days.
The God Save the Queen rocker said: "It's hilarious. I loved that video years ago when I was very young and impressionable."
