Olly Rix was "taken aback" by how good Casualty was when he first watched it.
The 40-year-old actor joined the medical drama earlier this year as clinical lead Flynn Byron and ahead of his first meetings with producers, he decided to watch some episodes of the long-running BBC show and was stunned by its high quality.
He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "I feel like everybody knows the theme song. It just wasn't on in my house, but I sort of binge watched - I can't remember exactly where it was in the show, but before I had that initial meeting, I binge watched episodes.
"And I was absolutely blown away. I couldn't believe how good it was.
"I thought - I don't really know what I'm basing this on, but it somehow wasn't what I was expecting. And I just take my hat off to it. It's great. It’s very exciting...
"I thought the calibre of the performances and a lot of the cinematography, a lot of the way it was shot, a lot of the way it was lit, I thought were brilliant.
"I was genuinely taken aback. I thought I was watching any of the other fantastic BBC dramas that I would normally watch. I was surprised."
Olly adores his character and hopes they are similar in certain ways.
He said: "I love Flynn! I'd get drunk with Flynn. I think it would be a great time.
"I think he has, as we all do, I suppose some real failings and some massive blind spots, but I think he has a brilliant heart, and he - my God, does he go to bat for the team around him? You know, like he's not gonna let anybody push them around...
"I hope there's some characteristics that I have. I mean, there's some differences and there's some similarities, for sure.
The former Call the Midwife star hopes he has a work ethic like Flynn.
Asked the characteristics of Flynn he'd like to see in himself, he said: "His work ethic is unparalleled. He's demanding with himself and with others but I think it's because he's so demanding of his own ability."
