The BBC has acquired a new "emotionally charged" crime drama series.

Dustfall is a "propulsive, atmospheric Tropic Noir that follows a detective whose deep sense of justice is challenged by a world where victims are doubted, predators hide in plain sight, and the legal system too often falls short".

The gripping six-part show - which is based on the novel The Unbelieved by Vikki Petraitis - stars The Newsreader's Anna Torv as detective Tig Pollard, and it is currently in production on the Gold Coast, Australia.

Sue Deeks, Head of Scripted Pre-buy Acquisitions at the BBC, said: "Starring the magnificent Anna Torv, Dustfall is a powerful, emotionally charged crime drama that is as thought-provoking as it is compelling."

Dustfall sees Tig return to her hometown of North Gap after spending years in the city, and she uncovers a series of drink-spiking assaults.

However, the case is turned on its head after one of the main suspects is brutally murdered.

Joining Anna on the show include NCIS: Sydney's Luke J Morgan, Colin From Accounts star Bert Labonte and Black Snow actress Alice Ansara.

Other cast members are Truly, Madly, Deeply's Juliet Stevenson, Love is a Four Letter Word actor Peter Fenton, Goolagong's Lila McGuire, and Toppo stars Harry Gilchrist and Ling Cooper Tang.

Heartbreak High actress Gemma Chua-Tran, Eden's Zoe Phillips, Deadloch star Kate Box, The Survivors actor Martin Sacks, and Heart of the Man's Theo Haitana also appear in Dustfall.

Also in the crime drama are All Saints actor Conrad Coleby, Bay of Fires star Ben Knight, A Little Resistance actress Kirsty O’Connor, Territory's Jay Ryan, and Last of the Space Age star Ed Wightman.

The programme - from Federation International - will air on BBC One and iPlayer, but a broadcast date has yet to be confirmed.

Downfall has been adapted for television by BAFTA nominee Dianne Taylor, Stuart Page, Belinda Chayko, and Beatrix Christian (Black Snow).

It is directed by Emma Freeman, who also executive produces on the series alongside Anna Torv, Deb Balderstone, Xavier Marchand and Daisy Gilbert.
