Suranne Jones 'returning as Doctor Foster' eight years after series ended
Suranne Jones is reportedly reprising the title role in a revival of Doctor Foster.
Suranne Jones is reportedly returning to Doctor Foster after eight years off air.
The 47-year-old star is said to be reprising her lead role as Gemma Foster in the hit BBC One thriller, which follows the scorned GP seeking revenge on her cheating husband.
According to The Sun newspaper's TVBiz column, the new series will see Foster's son Tom - who was a teenager played by Tom Taylor in 2017, when the show was last on air - return home as an adult.
A source added: "There was always a sense of unfinished business with Doctor Foster, as the storyline could easily roll on and on.
“It went out on a massive high, too, with around eight million tuning in every week to watch the drama unfold between the three lead characters.
"It was felt enough time had passed since its last outing — but not too much that fans weren’t still eager to return to the show.”
Filming will reportedly get underway in 2026, with an aim of putting the show back on air either by the end of the year, or in early 2027.
At the end of the second series, Tom ran away and was declared a missing person, and show creator Mike Bartlett previously admitted he would love a spinoff focused on the character.
He told the Daily Star newspaper in 2020: "I do think about Tom quite a lot. He’s gone and Gemma doesn’t know where. I feel I don’t know the answer and Gemma doesn’t know the answer. It’s been left in a limbo state.
“He’s out there doing something and there’s a story to be told in some way. One day I might tell that story. The characters stay live and you come back to them."
Mike had insisted he had no "burning desire" to work on new episodes of Doctor Foster, but it appears the chance to bring Tom back and tell his story has changed his mind.
At the time, he told The Sun: "We're definitely done and we're all doing - certainly they are doing - amazing things. Each of the two series feel like two different novels to me, so it's not like there's anything incomplete.
"It would only come back if we had the right story to tell in the right way - and I don't have a burning desire to find that story."
