ITV has "no plans" to resuscitate medical drama Malpractice.

The first series of the show saw Niamh Algar as Dr Lucinda Edwards, who was embroiled in a medical scandal, and Tom Hughes joined the cast for the second season.

But the show has now been shelved.

A spokesman told The Sun newspaper's TV Biz column: "We’re very proud of the two series of Malpractice and grateful to everyone who supported the show.

"Commissioning decisions involve many factors and while there are no plans for a third series, we’d like to extend our thanks to Grace Ofori-Attah and the team at World Productions for producing two brilliant series."

Malpractice has been axed despite the second series averaging three million viewers.

A source said: "While the second series didn’t attract quite the same figures as the first, three million is still a strong average.

"The clever set-up of Malpractice as an anthology series, with a new lead each time, meant the drama could have run and run and stayed fresh."

Last week, it was revealed ITV drama The Bay had been renewed for a sixth series - after some fans grew concerned it had been shelved.

A source told the Daily Star newspaper: "After months of discussions, the top brass at ITV have agreed to commission another series.

"Scripts are already being written and everyone is really excited about getting started."

Morven Christie led the cast of the gritty drama as family liaison officer DS Lisa Armstrong for the first two series, and she was replaced by Marsha Thomason, who portrays DS Jenn Townsend, for series three.

Marsha is expected to reprise her role for a sixth series.

What's more, Daniel Ryan has appeared in all five series as DI Tony Manning.

For series five, ITV penned a deal with BritBox in the US and Canada to launch the season across the pond first.

It's not yet known if there will be a similar deal in place for series six.
