Shaun Williamson rues not spending more time with late EastEnders co-star Tony Caunter
Shaun Williamson has expressed regret for not spending more time with his EastEnders co-star Tony Caunter, who died at the age of 88 earlier this month.
Shaun Williamson regrets not meeting up with EastEnders co-star Tony Caunter before his death.
The 59-year-old actor, who played the role of Barry Evans in the BBC soap, was left devastated by the passing of Tony – who portrayed Barry's on-screen father Roy Evans – earlier this month and expressed his anguish at not spending more time with him.
Speaking on Friday's (24.10.25) episode of Good Morning Britain on ITV, Shaun said: "We're always talking about 'let's get together', me and the other cast members were gonna go see him. If you're thinking about doing that sort of thing, just do it. Don't leave it til it's too late!"
Tony died at the age of 88 earlier this month – just eight days after the passing of his wife Frances Wallace – and Shaun explained that he attempted to get in touch after hearing of his partner's death.
He said: "I learned so much from him, he was like a second dad to me. About nine months ago, he said him and his lovely wife weren't very well.
"When Fran died, I tried to phone him, and I couldn't get hold of him, and a few days later I found out he died. He'd been in the nursing home, which is why I couldn't get hold of him."
EastEnders bosses paid tribute to Tony following his death and reflected on his portrayal of Roy – the husband of Walford legend Pat Butcher (Pam St Clement) – from 1994 to 2003.
A statement read: "It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Tony Caunter.
"Tony will forever be loved and respected by everyone at EastEnders for his warmth, kindness and humour as well as being greatly remembered by all of those at home who instantly took Roy to their hearts.
"Roy will always be remembered for his great love of Pat, despite him famously declaring his distaste in her choice of earrings, which gave us all one of Walford's greatest love affairs.
"Tony will never be forgotten by all those who worked alongside him for many years and everyone at EastEnders sends their love and condolences to Tony's family and friends."
