The HBO Max drama series - which stars Colin Farrell, 49, as Oswald ‘Oz’ Cobb - proved to be a huge success after releasing last year, and executive producer Matt Reeves has now revealed he and showrunner Lauren LeFranc are "in discussions" about making a possible follow-on season.

Speaking with Variety about a potential second season of The Penguin, the 59-year-old director said: "We’re in discussions. Lauren is thinking hard and we’re talking, so we’ll see.

"We love the show, and we think our cast is so incredible. The work that Lauren and the writers did was incredible.

"Our passion was in it, but never in our wildest dreams could we imagine it would have been received in the way that it was."

The Penguin - which is a spin-off from Reeves’ 2022 DC blockbuster The Batman - follows the titular mobster (Farrell) in his ruthless climb through Gotham City’s criminal underworld after the death of crime boss Carmine Falcone (Mark Strong) as he clashes with Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) and other rivals.

As well as The Penguin’s future, Reeves confirmed The Batman: Part II - which will see Farrell’s Oz return alongside Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader - would begin filming in spring next year ahead of its October 2027 release date.

He said: "We start shooting [the film] in spring, probably around the end of April or beginning of May.

"It’s been a long journey, but I am so incredibly excited. I’m really proud of the script me and Mattson [Tomlin] did, and we’ve started to share it with Robert."

This comes after The Penguin saw more success with Cristin Milioti winning the honour for best lead actress in a limited series at the Emmy Awards on Sunday (14.09.25).

During her acceptance speech, she said: "I am so profoundly grateful. I loved making this show and I loved playing Sofia so much.

"It is very hard to make sense of being alive right now in this world and so I’m deeply grateful for the bright spots.

"And making this show with our incredible cast and our incredible crew and getting to inhabit this woman was a bright spot for me despite it being, like, very grisly. Playing her felt like flying."
