Helen Lederer knew from the age of 10 she would one day go through a divorce.

The 70-year-old comedienne was disappointed when her marriage to the former Observer editor Roger Alton broke down 18 months after they tied the knot in 1989, but she knew it was coming after spotting three creases in her thumb when she was in junior school.

Speaking to Siobhan Wykes and Tim Vincent on their Best magazine 'Suddenly Single' podcast - https://www.youtube.com/@best_magazine_uk - Helen said: "I met him at a book launch, and I knew I would marry him and then divorce him.

"In junior school, there's this rule that if you have three creases in your thumb, it's your marriage line.

"So, I knew I'd get divorced from the age of 10 because of the line on my thumb!"

The 'Absolutely Fabulous' star walked down the aisle once again in 1999 - three weeks after her mum died - when she and her GP husband Chris Browne declared their love for each other.

Helen has revealed their meeting in a car park was by pure chance, and she went on to impress Chris by performing some "crazy moves" on a dance floor.

Recalling the moment their eyes first locked on each other, she said: "I didn't look great, and I'd gone to a dinner dance in Wiltshire with my best friend from school.

"I was in the car park thinking, 'Why am I here?'

"Then, I saw him. He was going to join our table.

"My friend says she can still remember the moment our eyes met. It was very Mills and Boon.

"I said something very witty about his bow tie, and he stood up for himself, so I thought, 'Okay, Helen, lose the attitude!'

"I'd been doing a lot of salsa, so we were on the dance floor doing some crazy moves, which he went along with.

"We married six months later."
