Rising pop sensation Chappell Roan has directly addressed the persistent rumours of being an “industry plant”.

The 26-year-old singer, who has gained recognition for her eclectic style and viral hits like 'Pink Pony Club', did not shy away from dismissing the claims made by social media users and offered a sharp response to her critics in a wide-ranging interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

The term “industry plant” is often used to describe artists perceived as artificially promoted by record labels or insiders. Roan’s retort reflects her frustration with the label, suggesting that these accusations are more about unfamiliarity than fact.

She said: "Just because you don’t know someone doesn’t mean that they’re an industry plant. Did you ever consider maybe you’re just out of the loop?”

While Roan may seem like a newcomer to some, she has actually been in the music industry for over a decade. Signed to Atlantic Records in 2015, she faced a turning point when the label dropped her in 2020. Instead of backing down, Roan decided to take full creative control of her career. Her recently released debut album, ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’, is a testament to her determination, as it was entirely independently produced, highlighting her versatility and talent as both a singer and songwriter.

After years struggling to get people to listen to her music, Roan is happy that she is getting the recognition she deserves but she can't help but feel frustrated that it has been a long journey to be recognised as an artist.

She said: "What’s so infuriating is how people are just now taking me seriously. Like, ‘You know what, bitch? I’ve been doing this s*** and you’re just now catching up.'"

Roan now has 3.4 million followers on TikTok and 4.5 million followers on Instagram and the exposure she has gained on social media means she is now worried about how her life will be changed by fame.

Chappell has even considered cutting her hair and dying it brown in order to overhaul her appearance so she can still do normal things like go to the movies or go grocery shopping.

The pop star is determined not to become a prisoner in her own home in order to avoid unwanted attention from fans and the wider public.

She said: "I don’t want to be agoraphobic. That’s [how] most of my peers [feel]. Every f****** artist is on this page. Everyone is uncomfortable with fans. Some people just have more patience. I f****** don’t.”

Roan was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder at the age of 22 and she is grateful that she has had a few years to live knowing that she has this condition, as she doesn't think she would have been able to cope with her newfound fame before her diagnosis.

She said: "I would not have been able to handle any of this even a year ago today. It would’ve just been too much.”
