Mark Ruffalo had to wear "ass pads" for his nude scenes in 'Poor Things'.
The 56-year-old actor - who plays the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - stars in the black comedy which sees Emma Stone's character Bella Baxter resurected from death by Willem Dafoe's alter ego Dr. Godwin Baxter, only to run off with deabuched lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Ruffalo) to seek excitement and liberation.
Ruffalo has revealed that director Yorgos Lanthimos had some unique prosthetics for him, because of his idea of what Duncan should look like from author Alasdair Gray's 1992 book of the same name that the screenplay is based on.
As part of Variety's 'Actors on Actors' series, Ruffalo spoke to his fellow MC star Robert Downey Jr, he said: "Do you know I had an ass pad in? My legs were like four inches bigger ... [Lanthimos] really wanted the silhouette."
Ruffalo explained that the director made him wear the pads to that his character would resemble a bird.
He added: "I had this whole built-out chest piece that never made it because it was just too much.
“But the big ass pads, the leg pads, the thigh pads, the calf pads, those were all playing. So when you look at that and you’re like, ‘Wow, he looks great.' Now you know, I was just wearing what the Avengers wear, but underneath my clothes."
Mark hated filming his nude scene for the movie, but he understood that it had to be included in order to achieve the comedic tone the picture wanted to achieve.
He said: "I was like, ‘Do I have to?’ All I can hear is, ‘Nobody wants to see your old ass anymore. Maybe you shouldn’t be doing movies like that anymore.’
"I mean, it’s my least favorite part of it, but I also saw it as an extension of the physical comedy that we were already finding. So it was just another way to tell the story.”
