Indian singer Sharda Rajan has died aged 89, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

The ‘Titli Udi’ singer - who won applause for the song from the 1966 film ‘Suraj’ and cabaret number ‘Baat Zara Hai Aapas Ki’ from ‘Jahan Pyar Miley’ - lost her battle with the deadly disease on Wednesday (14.06.23), her daughter Sudha Madeira announce via Instagram.

Alongside a picture of her beloved mother in a photo frame with a tealight underneath it, she wrote: "With great sadness, my brother Shammi Rajan and I announce the passing this morning of our beloved mother, playback singer Sharda Rajan, after a long and brave battle with cancer.”

Shammi told the Times of India: “She was battling cancer for several months."

Sharda received her first voice test in Bollywood with director Raj Kapoor, who spotted her singing at an event.

The star topped the charts with 'Titli Udi' in 1966.

She is credited as the first female singer in India to record a pop album with 'Sizzlers' in 1971.

The composer released the Ghazal album 'Andaaz-e-Bayan Aur' in 2007, a compilation of Mirza Ghalib's ghazals.

As well as her Bollywood career, she sang in Telugu, Marathi, English, and Gujarati.

Sharda won two Filmfare awards during her career.
