Zach Cregger 'really excited' to get to work with Amy Madigan on Weapons prequel
Amy Madigan took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Aunt Gladys in the 2025 horror movie, and will be reprising the role for the new film, which has the working title of Gladys.
Director Zach Cregger is “really excited” to work with Amy Madigan on the Weapons prequel.

Speaking at Collider’s Directors on Directing panel at the San Diego Comic Con on Thursday (24.07.26), Zach told the crowd: “First of all, I’m really excited about the Gladys movie, and I loved working with Amy. I loved that character. For the movie Weapons, it really made a lot of sense not to dive into her backstory because the device of Weapons was to keep her very mysterious.
“However, there’s an amazing story to be told about where Gladys comes from and how she became what we know her as. It’s got a lot of twists and turns and mysteries and crazy things, like Weapons does. I think it’s going to be great.”
Zach added that the script is “in progress” and “moving in the right direction”, insisting they are taking it “super seriously”.
Weapons, which also starred Josh Brolin, Julia Garner and Benedict Wong, made $270million at the global box office, and featured Gladys feeding on the energy of children to stay alive.
Speaking to The Guardian recently, Amy said she’s always been a fan of horror movies, and understands why people like to watch the films.
She said: “Horror operates on an emotional level. People want it and need it. They like to view it from afar. I grew up with all the genius black-and-white ones. Nosferatu, The Bride of Frankenstein, right up to Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?.
“That scared the hell out of me, though it’s maybe more gothic than horror. But it’s all based on the old fairytales. Someone stealing the children – that’s been around since ad infinitum.”
Amy, who is married to actor and long-time collaborator Ed Harris, also said she was struggling to get used to the attention she was getting following the release of Weapons.
She mused: “That’s going to take some getting used to. I mean, it’s crazy how people are responding to Gladys. But I have to accept that they’re also responding to me.”
