Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren set to return in another Conjuring film
After the huge success of the franchise’s previous installments, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren are set to return in another Conjuring film.
Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren are set to return in another Conjuring film.
A prequel is in development at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, with short film director Rodrigue Huart in talks to direct, according to Variety.
Rodrigue, who has no previous feature-length credits, has directed several award-winning short films including Transylvanie, which won a jury prize at SXSW in 2024, as well as Trigger and Real.
He is also writing and directing Suffer Little Children, a remake of the 1976 Spanish horror film Who Can Kill a Child? for Paramount.
Conjuring franchise writers Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote the two prior Conjuring instalments – 2023’s The Nun II and this September’s The Conjuring: Last Rites – are attached to write the screenplay.
It follows the success of The Conjuring: Last Rites, which was billed as the final chapter in the long-running supernatural series.
The film quickly became a global hit, earning a franchise-best $487 million worldwide, prompting the studio to greenlight further stories within the universe.
It remains unclear whether Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, who played Lorraine and Ed Warren respectively, will return after Last Rites appeared to conclude the couple’s story.
The upcoming film is expected to go back to the beginning of their ghost-hunting journey by focusing on the Warrens’ early years as paranormal investigators.
That likely means younger actors will take over the lead roles.
Separately, The Conjuring universe is expanding to television, with HBO developing a series that will continue the narrative established in the feature films.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Nancy Won has been hired as writer, executive producer and showrunner.
Across nine films – including spin-offs such as Annabelle and The Nun – The Conjuring franchise has become the highest-grossing horror series in history, earning a combined $2.7 billion.
The films, often produced on modest budgets, have become one of Warner Bros.’s most profitable properties.
The universe was created by James Wan, who directed the original Conjuring films, and produced by Peter Safran, who has overseen every entry to date.
