Toni Collette didn't realise The Sixth Sense was a horror movie.

The 52-year-old actress was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the 1999 thriller for her portrayal of Lynn Sear, however, she admits that she thought the blockbuster was a "beautiful, spiritual" tale.

It wasn't until one particular grabbing scene that Collette realised the M. Night Shyamalan flick was far more sinister.

The About A Boy actress played Haley Joel Osment's character Cole Sear's mother.

Cole believes he can see and talk to the dead and is the patient of children's psychologist Malcolm Crowe, played by Bruce Willis.

Collette told the Q with Tom Power podcast: “I remember walking past, they had like a makeshift edit suite on set. [...] And they were cutting the scene together where Haley is at that girl's house, played by Mischa Barton. [...] And he walks past the bed, I think, and she reaches out and grabs him. And the way it was shot, I was like, 'Oh, holy s***, I think this is a horror movie.'"

Meanwhile, Collette has recently relished getting in touch with her spiritual side through meditation.

The Little Miss Sunshine star has taken up the mindfulness practice and says it has transformed her life.

She told Britain's HELLO! magazine: “I meditate. It’s been life-changing.

“Meditation centres me. I find it makes every day so much better.

“I live in that space now and it’s much easier.”

Toni has two children, Sage, 17, and Arlo, 13, with ex-husband Dave Galafassi, and just as she has learned so much from meditative practices, she learns a lot from her kids.

Collette explained: “I learn from them. I named by daughter Sage because I felt as though she was already teaching me in the womb and she has continued to do that.”
