The Odyssey's hair and make-up looks revealed
Zendaya sported "sheer" make-up for her role in The Odyssey while Charlize Theron's hair look was created using mousse, leave-in conditioner and serum.
The hair and make-up team behind The Odyssey have given a breakdown of the stars' onscreen looks.
Gloria Pasqua Casny, who was head of the hair department on the film, and lead make-up artist Luisa Abel, have opened up about how they created looks for the cast revealing Zendaya sported "sheer" make-up for her role as Athena while Charlize Theron's hair look for Calypso was created using mousse, leave-in conditioner and serum.
Casny told Allure: "I think the whole thing with Athena [in this film] is that she is the image of the young village girl killed [during the Battle of Troy], and that's what stayed in [Matt Damon's character] Odysseus’ mind - that’s the form she took in his imagination - and it helped a lot with how her look ended up."
Abel added: "[I] wanted her character to be flawless while maintaining a grounded quality. She has a very youthful, translucent look that we achieved with sheer make-up, such as Merit blush."
Speaking about Charlize's windswept hair was given a "gritty look" by scrunching in mousse before adding a leave-in conditioner and serum from Virtue Labs to keep the style looking slick with water.
Casny added that she took some gauze from Theron’s costume to use as a hair tie so it "looked like she would do it herself."
Abel added of the actress' make-up: "[It was] tanned and broken down, with a more outdoor feel ... [showing the] warrior, self-sufficient aspect of her character."
For Anne Hathaway's looks as Penelope, the team settled on an "simple" and "classic" aesthetic but they changed her hair seven times throughout the film.
Casny said: "She had about seven changes total, and I had a drawer full of braids and things, so every day she came in and we just did our thing, making it a little different for each scene, all staying in that simple, classic aesthetic."
Matt Damon in his role as Odysseus spent a lot of the shoot looking like he was soaking wet so the team used "coats and coats" of hair wax to slick down his locks with some added sand to make it look gritty while they also used a lot of argan oil.
Casny explained: "One of our hairstylists [on set] has a farm that grinds the argan nuts and so we had this gallon of brilliant virgin argan oil that we put in little containers.
"It keeps the hair wet looking; you can spray water on it all day and it doesn’t dry out."
