Grand Theft Auto VI writer likens protagonist Lucia Caminos to Red Dead Redemption 2's Arthur Morgan
Grand Theft Auto VI writer Alexa D’Agostino says Lucia Caminos was created as a fully realised character capable of standing alongside Rockstar's most memorable protagonists.
Grand Theft Auto VI writer Alexa D’Agostino believes new protagonist Lucia Caminos can stand alongside some of Rockstar Games’ most beloved characters, including Red Dead Redemption 2's Arthur Morgan and Grand Theft Auto 4's Niko Bellic.
Lucia will be one of two playable protagonists when Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, alongside Jason Duval. The pair's relationship will form a central part of the game's story as they attempt to navigate the criminal underworld of Leonida.
Speaking to Love Magazine, D’Agostino explained that her approach to writing Lucia was influenced by the women in her own life, including her mother, who grew up in Newark, New Jersey.
D'Agostino said: "When it came to writing Lucia, I thought of the women I know. My mother was an immigrant who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, close to Lucia’s hometown of Liberty City."
D’Agostino described her mother as "rowdy, kind, but not to take any s***", adding that she related strongly to Lucia while writing the character.
She said: "I related a lot to Lucia, and writing her came very naturally to me. There are many badass women like her, just as there are many men like Jason. We just focused on capturing that."
Lucia is particularly significant for the series because she is the first fully voiced female protagonist in Grand Theft Auto history.
Rockstar has previously featured playable female characters, but Lucia represents a much more prominent role for a woman in the series.
For D’Agostino, making Lucia feel authentic was essential rather than simply creating a character designed to fill a particular role.
She said: "That’s how you get a woman that can stand tall next to the likes of Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic."
Arthur Morgan became one of Rockstar's most acclaimed protagonists following Red Dead Redemption 2's release, while Niko Bellic remains a fan favourite more than 15 years after Grand Theft Auto 4.
Lucia will share the spotlight with Jason throughout Grand Theft Auto VI, with Rockstar promising a relationship that will influence both the narrative and how players experience the game.
With Lucia now being positioned alongside Rockstar's most celebrated protagonists, expectations are high for her debut.
