Sonic and Crazy Taxi to receive new Netflix adaptations through Sega partnership
Sega and Netflix have announced a new partnership that will bring adaptations of Crazy Taxi, Sonic the Hedgehog and Like A Dragon spin-off Stranger Than Heaven to the streaming platform.
Sega is expanding its entertainment ambitions with a new partnership with Netflix that will bring three of its biggest gaming properties to the screen.
The collaboration will see adaptations of arcade racing classic Crazy Taxi, Sonic the Hedgehog and upcoming Like A Dragon spin-off Stranger Than Heaven arrive on Netflix in the coming years.
The first project announced is a live-action Crazy Taxi movie, described as a "hilariously crazy" take on Sega’s chaotic driving franchise.
The film will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writers behind the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun, who are expected to bring the game’s comedic energy and unpredictable style to the adaptation.
The announcement comes ahead of the planned launch of a Crazy Taxi reboot, which is currently scheduled to arrive next year.
Netflix is also developing an animated Sonic the Hedgehog series aimed at a younger audience.
The show will feature Sonic and his friends as heroes in a high-energy comedy adventure designed for preschool viewers while maintaining the personality and attitude associated with the franchise.
According to Netflix, the Sonic series will deliver "a high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series" focused on friendship and teamwork.
The third project will adapt Stranger Than Heaven, the upcoming Like A Dragon spin-off featuring appearances from Snoop Dogg and the likeness of Tupac Shakur.
Netflix described the project as a "badass action drama" that will offer a new perspective on Sega’s long-running crime series.
Netflix’s Brandon Riegg said the partnership highlights the strength of Sega’s gaming properties.
He said: "Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up."
Sega president Shuji Utsumi said the company was confident Netflix would respect the identity of each franchise.
Utsumi said: "The fandoms of these games deserve storytelling that honours what makes each title special."
The deal continues Sega’s push to expand its franchises beyond video games.
Sonic has already found success on the big screen, while the Like A Dragon series has received multiple television adaptations.
Netflix has also increased its focus on gaming adaptations, with projects based on franchises including Assassin’s Creed, Gears of War, Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering and Clash of Clans currently in development.
With Crazy Taxi, Sonic and Stranger Than Heaven, Sega is hoping to introduce some of its most recognisable worlds to a new generation of fans.
