Toy Story 5 star Tim Allen 'never really wanted to be a dad'
Toy Story 5 star Tim Allen has confessed he "never really wanted to be a dad" because he is not a "real fan of children".
Tim Allen "never really wanted to be a dad".
The Toy Story 5 star is father to two daughters - Kate, 36, with his ex-wife Laura Deibel, and Elizabeth, 17, with his second wife Jane Hajduk - but Tim has confessed he has never been a "real fan of children" so becoming a dad was a steep learning curve for him.
He told Us Weekly magazine: "I never really wanted to be a dad. I joke about it on stage; I’ve just never been a real fan of children. As people have said many times about parenting, you go through all this [stuff] to get a driver’s license or a passport, but there’s nothing about [raising] children.
"It was a work in progress. My wife says we wish we’d had five kids because you learn on the first two."
Tim went on to explain he was unsure about how to raise two girls but he did his best, adding: "I come from [a family of] seven boys and two girls, and it’s a very different world to me with girls.
"I have a different view of what will make a strong woman. The girl stuff I have little interest in - clothing, looks, gossip, and all that - [I focused on] learning finances, learning how to take care of yourself, and that works for boys and girls."
The actor has been open about his struggles with alcohol in the past and he admitted his two daughters had very different experiences of him as a father.
Tim said: "I was not sober for some of [Kate’s] formative years. I made amends to her.
"With the younger one [Elizabeth], I see how much different it is when I’ve been sober almost 30 years. She never knew any of that guy. I’ve thought about it many times, and I’ve talked to Kate, and she doesn’t hold it against me."
Tim previously opened up about staying sober for almost three decades and revealed the progamme he is enrolled in encourages addicts to embrace a more charitable life as part of their recovery.
During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2020, he explained: "Because I had money, and I was a star, people helped, they enable you to get by.
"The program I practice, it's all about as soon as you get it, you gotta give it away.
"A kid can't hold on to all these toys, and every time he sees a new toy, and he goes: 'Mine', you gotta drop one of those before you can grab another one.
"It doesn't happen overnight. It's a day-to-day thing. But giving back what somebody gives you ... I see this happen right here, this is a miracle. I see it in my particular program."
