A new Lord of the Rings game is reportedly in development.

According to Insider Gaming, the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) may invest roughly $100 million into the supposed title.

While the deal is reportedly not yet finalised, sources have said it’s “been in the works since last year”, and could be made official as soon as next week.

The title is allegedly being developed in part by Embracer Group - which holds the LOTR game rights - and the studio Revenge.

However, both have declined to comment, and Embracer affirmed it does “not comment on rumors or speculation”.

Sources suggest the game will take form as a third-person action experience, potentially to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy” in scope and ambition.

According to the report, multiple funding partners are involved beyond ADIO, and internal development has already been underway, at least to some degree.

This news is especially noteworthy given the recent struggles of LOTR adaptations in gaming.

The last major game release, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, launched in 2023 under Daedalic Entertainment and was widely criticised.

Gollum leaned heavily on stealth and narrative decision systems - letting players choose between Smeagol or Gollum paths - but suffered from performance issues, clunky controls, and negative reception.

The backlash was so severe that Daedalic reportedly shut down its development arm and shelved further LOTR projects.
