Lee Bowyer has only been to Montserrat twice.
The 47-year-old former footballer took charge of the Caribbean island’s national team in September 2023 but finds it “frustrating” that many other teams have “refused” to play at the British Overseas Territory because it is very difficult to get to.
He told World Soccer magazine: “I’ve been over there two times – once to meet the president and then for a double-header last November.
“It’s hard to get to Montserrat. You either fly to Antigua and then get on a small plane that holds about seven or eight people, or you go on a boat.
“But there’s been a problem with the boat service and some teams just refuse to get on those small planes so then we can’t play at home. It’s frustrating.
“From what I understand, everyone on the island is excited and they’re enjoying the football we’re playing.
“They can see there’s an improvement and they want to be part of it.
“We played two games at home and won both of them. That home advantage is massive.”
Many of Montserrat’s players play in the English lower leagues but Lee admitted it can be “difficult” to attract new squad members with links to the island.
He said: “We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to attract players and make sure there’s going to be a future for Montserrat.
“We’re doing research and analysis at the time…
“There are a few playing for England Under-18s or Under-20s at the moment. They’re at big clubs but the reality is a lot of them will be released. That’s when they realise they’re not going to play for England.
“My job is then to say, ‘Come and play for us. We’re a good side, we’re going to keep improving and you’ll enjoy our trips.’
“Persuading players is difficult.”
