Kelela recalls being 'floored' by PinkPantheress, but why?
Kelela has recalled listening to PinkPantheress for the first time and being "floored".
Kelela was "instantly floored" when she heard PinkPantheress for the first time.
The 43-year-old singer has lavished praise on PinkPantheress, admitting to being wowed by her musical talent.
Kelela told TIME: "I was instantly floored the first time I heard PinkPantheress.
"People on Twitter had already been joking that she was my daughter, so I immediately had to hear it for myself. What I found is an artist who already knows exactly who she is.
"I understood why people were making the connection between us, but also why it was reductive to stop there because she’s not an extension of anybody."
Kelela hailed the breadth of PinkPantheress' talents and for being a pioneer in the music business.
The singer explained: "She writes her own songs, produces a lot of her own music, and has an incredibly potent sonic vision. And she’s doing all of this as a Black femme in a genre that has rarely made room for us, which means every track she makes is also a door staying open behind her."
Meanwhile, PinkPantheress previously suggested that her good looks have influenced her music career.
The singer - whose real name is Victoria Walker - told Interview magazine: "I never wanted to show my face because I didn’t want it to affect how my music was received. Not even because of pretty privilege. It was more like, 'What if they don’t like how I look? What if they think it doesn’t match up with what they’re listening to?'
"I think the way I look has actually affected people’s willingness to listen to me. It’s helped me a lot, but it’s maybe made people not want to listen to me as well. I’m way more outside now, I’m more open with my opinions, but there’s part of me that wishes I didn’t do a lot of these things.
"Maybe it would’ve stunted my career, but sometimes I value mystique over everything else. It’s really beautiful to be someone who hides and then appears when a musical moment happens. Like Kate Bush. She’s one of my inspos as well."
