Xi Jinping says US and China have to 'develop and manage AI for good'
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for the US and China to keep artificial intelligence under human control as he and Donald Trump discussed the rapidly developing technology at the White House.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the US and China to work together to "develop and manage AI for good", saying the rapidly advancing technology must remain under human control.
Speaking at the White House on Thursday (24.09.26) during his state visit to Washington, Xi said the two countries had both the ability and responsibility to ensure artificial intelligence served people.
He said: "Both China and the United States are leading nations in artificial intelligence. We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good, and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control."
AI was among the issues on the agenda for Xi's meeting with US President Donald Trump, alongside trade, technology, security, Taiwan and the war in Iran.
Trump referred to artificial intelligence as "super intelligence" during his remarks, saying the two leaders would discuss the technology.
The US President said: "The decisions we make in these areas today can promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come."
However, the two leaders have indicated different approaches to the question of AI safeguards.
Trump has repeatedly rejected calls for additional regulation, including in a Truth Social post before the summit.
He wrote: "Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is.
"That is China's position also. Our guardrail is the DOJ!"
Xi also called for the US and China to keep their competition within limits.
According to Chinese state media, he said: "The competition should be a healthy one, and should be kept within bounds."
He also called for the two countries to maintain dialogue and prevent conflict.
The comments come as AI companies and governments debate how to manage increasingly capable systems, with concerns ranging from cybersecurity and misinformation to the possibility of advanced AI becoming difficult for humans to control.
The US and China are also competing to establish leadership in AI, making cooperation on safety more complicated.
Analysts have said the rivalry between the two countries could limit the scope for substantive agreements on AI, despite shared concerns about its risks.
For now, Xi's call for AI to remain under human control represents a broad principle rather than a detailed framework for governing the technology.
Whether Washington and Beijing can translate that principle into practical cooperation remains unresolved.
