The Orange is the New Black actress was left distraught when the Heroes star passed away last month at the age of 36 because they were so used to talking to one another every day.
Ruby grew tearful as she told Entertainment Tonight: “That was my best friend. We spoke every day for five years.
“I didn’t even think we were going to be friends. I didn’t know if I wanted to have any celebrity friends, because I didn’t have a great experience with the industry.”
The 40-year-old actress - who was among the stars at her pal's memorial service in Malibu over the weekend - recalled how she initially turned away to avoid speaking to Hayden when they met for the first time, but the blonde beauty wouldn't take no for an answer.
She recalled: “I saw her, she saw me, and I just remember thinking, ‘Oh, no.'
“And then she ran up anyway and was like, ‘Hey, I’m Hayden. Can we go talk somewhere? We’ve got a lot in common.’ I just laughed.
“She says I said, ‘I don’t think so,’ but I think I just laughed. And then we went and talked, and we had everything in common.
"[We shared] five years of friendship, of texting every day and checking in on each other.” She added, “Hayden, all that she ever wanted was to have her story told her way, on her terms.”
Ruby previously admitted she had "so much to say" about Hayden - who was found unconscious in a South Carolina Airbnb by on/off boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach - and her death but wanted to "get this right" for the sake of her friend's 11-year-old daughter Kaya, whose father is boxer Wladimir Klitschko.
She wrote on her Instagram Story: "I have so much I want to say about our dear Hayden. If the roles were reversed, she would have sorted this already.
"Our brave, courageous H faced everything head on. She was fearless.
"But it is LOUD and wrong and scary out there right now. So naturally I keep calling Hayden for advice on how to handle this.
"I need more time to get this right for [Panettiere's daughter] Kaya, I also need folks to have patience. Wait for all the information."
