Sex and The City star Jason Lewis was sleeping on "floors" and couldn't afford to buy food before his acting career took off.

The 55-year-old TV star - who landed his big break playing Jerry 'Smith' Jerrod in the show - worked as a model before he took up acting and he moved to Europe at the age of 21 to chase his dreams in the fashion industry but he struggled to lands jobs and found himself completely broke while living in Paris, France.

During an appearance on Kristin Davis' Are You a Charlotte? podcast, he explained: "I starved for a while ...

"I would go to like an outdoor cafe … and take a pot of their mustard and dump it on [a baguette], and then I’d have mustard bread sandwiches for a lot of my meals ...

"[I] slept on floors ... I think my first like decent money started coming in about a year and a half later. So there was like a six-month starvation period where I could buy this one cucumber and this piece of cheese."

Jason then joked: "It was easy to stay skinny, though."

Jason's career turned around in the mid-1990s when he landed roles on TV shows including High Sierra Search and Rescue and Beverly Hills, 90210 in 1997 before joining the cast of Sex and the City in 2003.

However, he's now taken another career turn after stepping out of the spotlight to swap acting for writing.

Jason recently revealed he's moved from California to Costa Rica to work on a series of fantasy novels - three interconnected trilogies set in different periods of time in the same universe.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: "I was in a space where I’ve been working on a fantasy book series. Three trilogies. [It's] closer to Lord of the Rings. It’s epic fantasy. It’s my own magic system based more in physics than the soft magic of casting spells and stuff like that."

He also explained he moved to Costa Rica so he could immerse himself in his writing, adding: "This is me on a journey of discovery as much as anything. "I’ve never written novels before this, so I don’t have a bunch of feathers in my cap to lean on. I wanted a healthy lifestyle and access to good food.

"I surf, and being right next to a beach is very easy motivation for me to stay healthy ... I pretty much write every single day ...

"I don’t think I’ve taken a day off for two weeks. I can only hold focus for maybe two hours at a time before I start drifting."
