Arrowhead Game Studios has admitted that recent criticism from the Helldivers 2 community has been "painful to read", as the studio promises to improve communication and address player concerns.

The comments come from chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt, who hosted a Reddit AMA aimed at tackling growing frustration within the game’s player base, particularly on the r/HelldiversUnfiltered subreddit.

Pilestedt said: "I did this AMA because I saw the disappointment, criticism and mistrust. A lot of the points that you make are fair. Some are very painful to read. But I know that it comes from a group of players that care deeply about Helldivers and wants it to remain special."

Since its successful launch in early 2024, Helldivers 2 has enjoyed strong player numbers and critical acclaim, but has also faced backlash over balance changes, progression systems, and monetisation elements such as Warbonds.

Community concerns have also centred on bugs, resource systems, and the evolving Galactic War meta.

Pilestedt acknowledged that some players feel the studio has prioritised premium content over core fixes, insisting that "that is not the intent", while conceding that "perception matters".

To address this, Arrowhead is pledging more consistent and transparent communication.

Pilestedt explained: "You want us to communicate better - that means accurate patch notes, transparency around priorities, more accurate known issues."

He also confirmed plans to engage with players more regularly, promising to return for community updates every other week.

Pilestedt said: "When our communication fails, you guys fill in the blanks. And right now, many of those blanks are being filled with mistrust - and that’s on us."

While no immediate gameplay changes were announced, Pilestedt stressed that the feedback marks a turning point for the studio.

The developer explained: "This is not only a demand for more - it is a demand for meaningful changes… and a game that continues to feel worthy of the passion you, the community, has given it."
