Getting 'hangry' is a real sensation.

Researchers say that having an empty stomach was found to leave people irritable and short-tempered.

The term 'hangry' is used to describe somebody who is both hungry and angry at the same time.

The effects of hunger are said to worsen negative emotions by more than a third and boffins suspect that low blood sugar levels make it hard for the brain to control emotions.

Academics from Anglia Ruskin University pointed out that animals become more aggressive when they are hungry to boost their chances of fighting off rivals to get food.

Lead researcher Professor Viren Swami said: "The results suggest that the experience of being hangry is real because hunger was associated with greater anger and irritability and lower pleasure."
